The minerals industry is one of Britain’s largest manufacturing sectors with a turnover of £18 billion.

Mineral products are made using raw materials from the ground often in combination with recycled or secondary materials.
A total of 400 million tonnes of essential aggregates, industrial minerals and other manufactured mineral products were produced in Great Britain in 2018, according to the latest figures published in Profile of the UK Mineral Products Industry, by the Mineral Products Association (MPA), making the sector the UK’s biggest producer by volume.
Take a look around you. Everything you see is made from materials that either grow or come from the ground. Those from the ground are minerals. They are transformed into essential mineral products that we each use every day, often without realising it.
Our approach to sustainability has evolved progressively since MPA was formed in 2009. We now represent 14 product groups with 520 members under an umbrella that covers 20 per cent of aggregates production and 100 per cent of GB cement production. This level of activity combined with a substantial total landholding means that MPA can do much to influence the cause of sustainable development across the UK.
