Transport

All mineral products rely on transport to meet customers, from concrete mixers and cement tankers to tipper lorries, freight trains, ships and barges. The large majority of transport in the sector is by road, with for instance 87 per cent of aggregates transported by road. The sector is important for rail freight however, with “construction materials” the second largest sector of rail freight to the network.

The MPA Transport group focuses on safety, standards and policy, and has strong relationships with MPQC to discuss the industry’s needs for training. MPA is a Construction Logistics and Community Safety Strategic Partner, a National Highways’ Driving for Better Business (DfBB) scheme partner, a member of Logistics UK and regularly engages with National Highways, TfL and other highways authorities. It also supports the Rail Freight Group’s Construction forum, which brings together MPA and RFG members with an interest in rail freight.
