Following major disruptions to construction and manufacturing activity during the Covid-19 spring lockdown, and the associated demand for heavy-side building materials, the latest survey by the Mineral Products Association (MPA) points to a strong recovery over the summer, albeit from a low base. This has now given way to concerns about winter order books.

Workplace Transport and Pedestrian Interface has been identified by MPA's Health & Safety Committee as one of 'The Fatal 6' high consequence hazards that have been the main cause of fatalities and serious injuries and incidents over the last decade.

Recognising that it is more timely than ever to acknowledge that mental health and wellbeing issues can be experienced by individuals at all levels within an organisation, the Mineral Products Association (MPA) has published new resources to support managers and employees to recognise and manage health and wellbeing issues.
With COVID-19 levels rising across the UK, the Mineral Products Association (MPA) recognises the importance of maintaining the health and safety disciplines that will be essential to keep everyone Covid secure and safe and healthy at work. To assist members with the on-going need to remind all employees of these disciplines, MPA has produced some additional posters to help reinforce the key messages. Developing on the theme used in MPA’s ‘10 Rules of Engagement’, the posters remind individuals to ‘Stay COVID-19 Alert’.

The MPA has responded to HM Treasury’s consultation on removing the rebate for red diesel. The Chancellor announced the policy in his March Budget, but opened a consultation to assess if some industries ought to be retain the rebate alongside agriculture, forestry and others.

The MPA has called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to focus on delivery of infrastructure and fairer tax treatment of the industry in its submission to the Comprehensive Spending Review, which sets out Government’s planned expenditure for the coming years. It also opposed the removal of the red diesel rebate, made the case for the next steps on the Aggregates Levy and set out some of the long-term decisions needed now to support the industry achieve net zero.

The MPA welcomes the UK government’s support for the ‘Leaders Pledge for Nature’ for nature recovery announced on 28 September. However, the ambition to protect a third of the land and sea for wildlife must be backed up by proper resourcing, for both creation and enhancement of new areas but also management of existing protected sites.
