MPA evidence indicates that the area of land restored in 2013 again exceeded the area prepared for new extraction. High quality restoration of sites remains an industry priority. Our uniquely placed industry already has a proven legacy of outstanding habitat creation and wildlife promotion through quarry site management and restoration. MPA members want to build on this legacy and realise their potential.
The MPA Restoration Awards recognise excellence in returning quarried land to beneficial after-uses. With a pedigree stretching back more than 40 years, the scheme has rewarded a range of mineral operators across the UK, with the highly coveted top accolade: becoming the Cooper-Heyman Cup winner. The 2013 Restoration Awards recognised eight member companies for their outstanding work. The Cooper-Heyman Cup winner was Lafarge Tarmac's Ibsley Quarry in Hampshire (see case study).
The MPA Restoration Awards run alongside our Biodiversity Awards to recognise the exceptional achievement and future potential of the mineral products industry in protecting and enhancing the nation’s biodiversity.
