The proportion of industry sites covered by certified environmental management systems has continued to increase, reflecting high operational standards across the sector.

The cement industry has recorded further success in meeting a range of emissions targets agreed with Government. Between 1998 and 2009, emissions of oxides of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide fell by 63 per cent and 85 per cent respectively, while dust emissions declined by 79 per cent per tonne manufactured.

The transposition of the EU Mining Waste Directive into UK law is an issue of pressing concern. The challenge has been to find a proportionate way forward reflecting the low level of risk of MPA operations. After long-running discussions, most areas of guidance on the operation of the MWD have been agreed with the Environment Agency in England and Wales, while in Scotland there has been a more pragmatic and practical approach to implementation through planning authorities.
