New Health and Safety Guidance for contractor management: Click here.
The fact that many of our employees work in rugged, outdoor environments and that heavy machinery is a key feature of our operations, makes safety a particular challenge. We have, nonetheless, made huge progress in recent years with MPA beating its health and safety ‘Hard Target 2009’, which aimed to halve the 2004 total of reportable injuries by the end of 2009 - a reduction of 65% was recorded,. The cement industry, now represented by MPA Cement, posted an even more impressive 81% reduction in Lost Time Injuries over the same 5 year period (2004-2009). Looking back further over the last 10 years, the industry achieved an 83% reduction in work-related injuries.
With the aim of continually improving health and safety performance, MPA has now set a new ‘Hard Target’. The overarching goal, to be applied with immediate effect, is to achieve Zero Harm. The interim 5-year Targets, based on the 2009 calender year, are a 50% reduction in the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) for Directly Employed 2009 to 2014 and a 50% reduction in Lost Time Injury (LTI) numbers for Contractors 2009 to 2014.
The chart below shows the continuing positive progress achieved by MPA members in driving down injuries, year on year. |
